The One Thing (The Surprisingly Simple Truth Behind Extraordinary Results) by Gary Keller

You want to do a lot of things. You want to improve at everything. You want to cook breakfast, go to the gym, go to school, go to work, cook lunch, meditate for an hour, read a book, go back to gym, cook dinner, then work on your online blog.. You want to do all these things but only two things can end up happenings:

BUY The One Thing (The Surprisingly Simple Truth Behind Extraordinary Results) by Gary Keller The ONE Thing: The Surprisingly Simple Truth Behind Extraordinary Results

  1. You can’t do them all.
  2. You do them all, but you’re average at best for all of them.

Jack of All Trades, Master of None.

  • No one who was average ever truly succeeded at creating extraordinary results.
  • You need to forget about achieving balance.
  • All successful people have that “one thing” that they’re great at.

Mozart is only known for his music. When you think Mozart, you think about an exceptionally talented and well trained classic pianist. His piano work is what sets him apart.

LeBron James is only known for playing basketball. When you think Lebron James, you think about the Cleveland Cavaliers or the Miami Heat. His work on the basketball court is what sets him apart.

Your goal is to find what sets you apart from the rest, and train three to four hours a day for 5-10 years until you achieve mastery; it is that simple. Choose what you love, choose what you’re good at, and practice.

You can’t be extraordinary and live a balanced life.

Multi-tasking is a lie; you cannot do it. Forget it. There’s no need to achieve all of these things. Accept the chaos.

What you need to do is find success through your one thing, then make money doing it. What you’re going to do next is purchase leverage. Today we take leverage for granted.

  • Do you raise your own food?
  • Do you build your own house?
  • Do you engineer your own car?

By making money through our one passion, the one thing we become extraordinary at, we can pay others to organize our chaos. Acquiring more time to master your skills is the goal. Purchase more leverage.

A 15 minute distraction may take you 30 minutes to get back into a focused rhythm.

What can you do right now that will help fulfill your daily, weekly, monthly and yearly goals? Work on today’s domino. Establish one goal. We often say that we need to manage our priorities, but that’s completely wrong. You cannot have multiple priorities; that defeats the purpose of establish a priority. You cannot have two best friends.

Most importantly, find someone or some way to hold yourself accountable to your goals. There is not a professional athlete in the world who does not have a coach. There are no majorly successful musicians who failed to have mentors and tutors and teachers.

Book Review: The Divergent Series – Insurgent by Veronica Roth

Veronica Roth’s second book in the Divergent Trilogy series is a science fiction novel for young adults. The book takes place in a future version of Chicago; where civilization is in a bit of dystopia. At about 500 pages, Insurgent is an awesome read about main characters Beatrice “Tris” Prior and Tobias “Four Eaton.

Without spoiling too much, there are a multitude of factions within the series competing with one another for resources while also attempting to establish peace. This action thriller of a book was also portrayed in the movie tilted “Insurgent” which came out in 2015. The film was able to acquire about $300 million USD at the box office, and there are about 180,000 ratings for the movie on IMDb.

Book Review: Zero to One – Notes on Startups, or How to Build the Future by Peter Thiel| Stephen Diagram

Zero to One – Notes on Startups, or How to Build the Future by Peter Thiel

I’ve personally had my eye on this book for about a year now; knowing one day I just had to read it. Peter Thiel is one of the founders of PayPal; along with a name we may have already come across, the legendary Elon Musk. Musk is head of SpaceX and Tesla Motors. Musk and Thiel, the author of “Zero to One” were able to survive the Dot-Com / Dotcom bubble by following a series of steps.

Zero to One: Notes on Startups, or How to Build the Future

For a business to succeed, Thiel tells entrepreneurs to ask themselves a series of incredibly important questions.

  • Engineering: Is your product/service revolutionary? Will it be a huge breakthrough? It needs to be ten times better than your competition

  • Timing: Is now the perfect time to launch your business?

  • Monopoly: Are you going to acquire a majority share in a small market/niche?

  • People: Do you have the right team?

  • Durability: Will you business exist ten to twenty years from now?

  • Distribution: Do you have the ability to deliver your product / service, not just create it.

  • Secret: Are you doing something unique that nobody else really noticed yet?

Thiel teaches how to negotiate and find the right team; people who looks like salesmen are typically terrible at sales. The best are hidden and secret. From his Silicon Valley experience, people going to work in a suit are not going to work.

Most importantly, overcome trying to acquire a “First Mover Advantage.” It’s important to be the first when creating a new revolutionary product or service, but you should aim to be the “Last Mover”; acquire a monopoly. Competition means having competitive prices, which drives down profit margins.

Capitalism is about acquiring as much capital as possible; competition forces you to have competitive prices, thus eliminating your potential to acquire capital.

Capitalism and Competition are opposites.

Happiness & Your Health: How to Demand a Positive Life

“The world is out to punish those who refuse to demand happiness out of their own lives.”

I recently wrote this line not thinking very much out of it, but as I returned to it, I couldn’t help but sit and let it soak in a little more. Being happy shouldn’t have to be this huge undertaking that we’re required to remain conscious about; instead it should be a right, no?

The Happiness Project (Revised Edition): Or, Why I Spent a Year Trying to Sing in the Morning, Clean My Closets, Fight Right, Read Aristotle, and Generally Have More Fun

I questioned whether happiness is something we earn, or something we are owed.

Then I just wrote the line; that the world punishes those who don’t seek comfort, who don’t seek happiness.

Though you shouldn’t stress yourself too much with difficult tasks; you should find simple bits of joy throughout the day.
