Book Summary & Review: The Power of Habit: Why We Do What We Do in Life and Business – by Charles Duhigg | Stephen Diagram

The Power of Habit: Why We Do What We Do in Life and Business – by Charles Duhigg

  1. Bad habits are often formed through comfort
  2. You cant ever completely erase an old habit : this is why old habits are easy to sink back into
  3. People often replace one bad habit with a second bad habit : now they have two bad habits to back back into. For example, people who replace a smoking habit with a drinking habit
  4. Loser friends often try to offend you, saying things like “you’ve changed”
  5. People with bad habits often point out others and their bad habits

Habits are a 3 step process

  1. Cue
  2. Routine
  3. Reward

Habits are delicate in the sense that you need a cue to trigger them.

Cues fall into 1 of 5 categories

  1. Location
  2. Time
  3. Emotions
  4. Others
  5. Last Action

When you start forming a habit, dopamine spikes around the time you receive the reward, but over time the dopamine tends to spike around the time you receive the cue. This causes a dopamine craving.

To increase your chance of forming a new habit

  • plan around “inflections points of pain”
  • know and expect these inflection points of pain to occur
  • These are bumps in the road and tiny obstacles
  • Push through them.

Use Keystone Habits to your advantage

Some habits help spawn even more habits.

For instance, if you make a habit to fill your calendar and check it often, then you will be in a better place to form new habits. If your calendar tells you to make your bed or brush your teeth every morning, then the initial habit of checking your calendar will push you toward brushing your teeth / making your bed.

Health Benefits of Matcha Green Tea: Weight Loss and Metabolism | Stephen Diagram

Recently I’ve been self-training myself as a personal home barista; though I’m being kind of funny when I say that. For people who have been following me the past few months, I’ve grown a deep connection with Matcha Green Tea.

Matcha is this specific type of high altitude green tea. It’s from Japan, and its grown in shade. People say it has 37 times the health benefits of a typical glass of boring bagged tea, but that’s probably a huge exaggeration; I imagine its realistically more like 10 cups.

Either way, matcha green tea is prepared a specific way; traditionally you would use a whisk that looks like this:

so naturally, I’ve been getting good frothing my matcha green tea, because that is how it is traditionally prepared.

You can buy the traditional bamboo whisk and chasen here BambooWorx Japanese Tea Set, Matcha Whisk (Chasen), Traditional Scoop (Chashaku), Tea Spoon, The Perfect Set to Prepare a Traditional Cup of Matcha.

Instead of going super traditional, I got this more modern, electronic mixer, which I think is sold a frothing tool. I’m not too sure, but I’ve used it to make a variety of coffee and cream drinks, as well at matcha latte.

You can make homemade whipped cream as well, which is what I usually do since I’m currently on a no sugar diet; and milk contains natural sugar that I can’t have.

Pictured above is the electronic whisker next to a chasen, (CHA-SEN).

Matcha is really good for weight less because it prevents your body from storing fat cells. It also speeds up your metabolism, and carries much more of an energizing boost than a regular cup of green tea.

If you’re new to matcha, I’d stick to only a half-teaspoon for your first time. Remember to drink after eating food, or you might get a belly ache on a empty stomach your first couple times.

Matcha comes in different qualities.

There’s culinary: cheaper price and richer in flavor, bold and sometimes slightly bitter. This is best used for cakes, waffles, pancakes, or lattes. Anything that you’re going to add flavor to.

Ceremonial grade is rather expensive, but worth it if you want a very naturally sweet and aromatic drink. This matcha is very very very light and almost neon green. The highest quality. You definitely get what you pay for though.

I recommend this matcha green tea if you’re looking for a good price, and good quality Jade Leaf Matcha Green Tea Powder – USDA Organic, Authentic Japanese Origin – Classic Culinary Grade (Smoothies, Lattes, Baking, Recipes) – Antioxidants, Energy [30g Starter Size]

Product of Japan is always the way to go!

Even if you don’t like green tea, I’d highly recommend the little automatic electronic matcha whisk froth tool – it doesn’t really have a nice convenient name. I’ve been able to make so many light, bubbly, airy drinks of coffee. So it’s very useful to have if you don’t already own a nice espresso machine.
